Old Fashioned Cake Doughnuts (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Doughnuts

01 - 1 large egg
02 - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
03 - 3 tablespoons melted vegetable shortening
04 - ½ cup buttermilk or whole milk
05 - ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
06 - ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
07 - ⅔ cup granulated sugar
08 - 1½ teaspoons baking powder
09 - 2½ cups all-purpose flour

→ Glaze

10 - 3 cups powdered sugar
11 - ¼ teaspoon almond extract
12 - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
13 - 2 tablespoons milk, plus a splash more if needed
14 - 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted

→ For Frying

15 - 1 quart vegetable oil

# Instructions:

01 - Stir all the glaze things in a bowl so it turns smooth. Dunk the warm doughnuts in, then set them on a rack so the coating can set up.
02 - Drop your dough rings into oil heated to around 365 to 375°F. Let them cook for about one and a half to two minutes on each side till they're a lovely golden color.
03 - Sprinkle some flour on your work area, roll the dough out until it's about half an inch thick, and cut out your doughnuts.
04 - Beat together milk, egg, melted shortening, and vanilla. Pour this into the dry mix and stir until everything just comes together.
05 - Dump flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt into a sifter and sift together in a big mixing bowl.

# Notes:

01 - Old-school, soft inside doughnuts finished with a sweet vanilla drizzle.
