Turn your oven on to 148°C (300°F) and get a cupcake pan ready with liners.

Mix together cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, salt, and flour in a big bowl. Whisk it well.

Pour in the egg, milk, vanilla, and vegetable oil. Keep mixing until it's nice and smooth.

Slowly mix in the hot water. The batter will look pretty runny, but that's good.

Carefully fill up each cupcake liner halfway with the batter.

Let them bake for 18–21 minutes. Poke the center with a toothpick—if it comes out with a few crumbs, they're ready.

Let the cupcakes sit for around 5 minutes in the pan, then move them onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Top them off with chocolate or vanilla frosting, and sprinkle on your favorite decorations if you want.
